Your new United States Champion!

What's the story?

This week on WWE Raw, as part of the Superstar Shake-up, Jinder Mahal showed up from SmackDown Live carrying his US Championship. However, GM Kurt Angle immediately set up a match for the title pitting a RAW superstar against Jinder Mahal. Jeff Hardy came out to the ring, accepting the challenge and ended up defeating Mahal to become the new US Champion.

After the show, Hardy gave his thoughts on becoming Champion, in a backstage segment with Mike Rome.

In case you didn’t know…

Jeff Hardy had been out of action for quite a few months after sustaining a rotator cuff injury back in September last year. He returned to WWE TV with a cameo at the Raw 25 show and in the Ultimate Deletion match between his brother Matt and Bray Wyatt.

Hardy returned to action Raw last week and competed in a 6-man tag match alongside Finn Balor and Seth Rollins to defeat The Miz and the Miztourage.

The heart of the matter

After Bray Wyatt and 'Woken' Matt Hardy formed an alliance of sorts, it seems like Jeff Hardy is now set for a singles push following his US Championship victory. In a backstage interview, Hardy expressed his happiness at 'completing the set' with his US Title win, and how it felt good to be his own self - The Charismatic Enigma - again. (Thanks to RingsideNews for the transcript).

"First and foremost, I have never been the United States Champion. So this might complete the set as far as my career goes. But I don’t know if I can take anymore, I mean it don’t get much better. I mean I am just coming back from my rotator cuff surgery, my brother’s so WOKEN, he’s kind of out of control. So it feels good to be just Jeff Hardy: The Charismatic Enigma and unite with my fans like I am best for."

The high-flyer then went to express his excitement about heading into Saudi Arabia for the Greatest Royal Rumble event as the Champion, and revealed that he was confident that he could beat Jinder Mahal again at the event, where he will defend his new title against the Modern Day Maharaja.

You can watch the segment below:

What's next?

Jeff Hardy will defend the US Title against Jinder Mahal at the Greatest Royal Rumble event on April 27th. The winner will probably go on to face Randy Orton at Backlash.

Author's take

It seems like the team of 'Woken' Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt is working quite well, so it makes sense to push Jeff Hardy as a singles competitor. Brace yourselves for some exciting, high-flying action in the weeks to come.
