WWE News: Jinder Mahal has now held the WWE Championship for longer than Ric Flair

Jinder Mahal was the 50th different person to capture the WWE Championship

What's the story?

As of today, September 19th, Mahal's reign as WWE Champion reached 120 days. A number that surpasses the total number of days that two-time WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair held the same title over the course of two reigns.

In case you didn't know...

Most will remember Mahal from his time with 3MB — a stable that lost a lot more matches than it won. However, this isn't the first time that the Modern Day Maharaja has received a push from WWE.

In 2012, NXT changed from a competition show to the brand the WWE Universe knows today. A tournament was held to crown the first ever NXT Champion, and Jinder made the finals, which he lost to Seth Rollins.

The heart of the matter

Ric Flair held the WWE Championship on two separate occasions. The first was in 1992 after winning the Royal Rumble match, and then he later regained it in September of that same year.

His first reign totalled 77 days while the second reign only lasted for 41. Flair's first stint in the WWE as a full-time competitor was short as it only lasted from September 1991 until January 1993. He became a regular wrestler for the company again from 2003 to 2008 but never won a world title.

Jinder Mahal defeated Randy Orton for the WWE Championship at Backlash this past May and has successfully defended the title since.

What's next?

Jinder will put the WWE Championship on the line once again at Hell In A Cell where he will face Shinsuke Nakamura. With a few weeks until this pay per view, expect the feud between these two to escalate on this week's edition of Smackdown Live.

Author's take

Obviously, Jinder Mahal will never be considered a better champion than Ric Flair. I will always consider the Nature Boy as the greatest champion of all-time, even after John Cena breaks his record. However, this is still a very interesting stat, to say the least.

Even though some people are quick to dismiss this title reign, I think Jinder has done a remarkable job as champion.
