WWE News: John Cena added to Fastlane main event
What’s the story?
In his quest to earn a spot on the WrestleMania card, John Cena defeated AJ Styles in the main event of SmackDown Live and was added to the WWE Championship match at Fastlane.
In case you didn’t know...
The 16-Time World Champion addressed his aspirations for WrestleMania 34 and revealed that a match against The Undertaker was deemed “impossible.”
Cena would reveal his intentions to earn a spot on the card through the SmackDown roster, which lead to General Manager Daniel Bryan booking a match between Cena and Styles at the start of this week’s SmackDown Live episode.
The heart of the matter
Cena and Styles produced excellent matches during their original rivalry and this week’s match served as a reminder of their greatness.
Both men landed their respective finishers, but it was ultimately Cena who would emerge victorious after countering the Calf Crusher and driving The Phenomenal One to the mat with a third Attitude Adjustment.
After the match ended, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens made their way to the ring with the intentions of assaulting Cena, only for Baron Corbin to be the first of the three to lay hands on him.
Corbin, Owens and Zayn continued to assault Cena and Styles until Dolph Ziggler ran down to the ring to fend them off.
Ziggler seemed to be siding with the babyfaces but quickly threw Styles out of the ring, which led to Cena dropping The Showoff with an Attitude Adjustment.
What’s next?
SmackDown’s final brand-exclusive pay-per-view will take place on Sunday, March 11, and will emanate from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Many are convinced that Cena vs. The Undertaker is the match planned for WrestleMania and are expecting the Deadman to either interfere and cost Cena the match or for Cena to lose the title match and confront The Undertaker at another time.
Author’s take
The WWE Championship picture was overbooked enough with the additions of Corbin and Ziggler but the addition of Cena will only make the eventual match more cluttered.
Hopefully, all six competitors have a great outing that surpasses what their counterparts on Raw did in the Elimination Chamber.
