What’s the story?

As reported by PWInsider, John Cena opened up on a potential WrestleMania trilogy match against The Rock and admitted that he was open to a trilogy match with the Fast and Furious star.

Upon being probed as to whether WrestleMania 35—which takes place at the same venue as did their second ‘Mania match, the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey—Cena weighed in with the variables concerning the possible rubber match.

In case you didn’t know…

The first WrestleMania match between John Cena and The Rock took place at WrestleMania 28 at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida—a matchup that saw “The Brahma Bull” defeat Cena in the main event of the evening.

The rematch between Rocky and Cena took place on the year later at WrestleMania 29 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey—with Cena defeating The Rock.

The heart of the matter

During the recent WrestleMania 35 press conference, the WWE confirmed that next year’s Show of Shows, WrestleMania 35, will indeed take place at the MetLife Stadium—the same venue that hosted the 29th edition of ‘Mania. That, in turn, has led to speculation within the professional wrestling community as to whether the WWE Universe could finally get to witness The Rock and John Cena settle their feud in a trilogy match on the grandest stage of them all.

Addressing the possibility, Cena neither confirmed nor denied as to whether the trilogy match could take place next year, however, he asserted that he simply faces whoever is put in front of him by the WWE. Cena emphasized that he’s set an example of performing to the best of his abilities, and he refrains from predicting or trying to lobby for a certain matchup.

Furthermore, Cena elucidated that while his WrestleMania 28 match with The Rock was great, their rematch at the MetLife Stadium at WrestleMania 29 was even better, as the showdown witnessed the birth of a new level of respect between him and The Rock for one another.

Cena insinuated that during his rivalry with The Rock, he was strongly pro-WWE, and was “too stupid” to understand that Rocky’s Hollywood career wasn’t a negative per se, but in fact, a great thing which brings more eyeballs to the WWE—something that Cena eventually realized. Cena added that for the trilogy match between him and The Rock to happen, it has to be bigger than their WrestleMania 29 showdown.

While it may be a tall order, Cena admitted that WWE usually finds a way to make things bigger and better..

What’s next?

John Cena is yet to be booked in a match at WrestleMania 34—with experts noting that Cena could face The Undertaker at ‘Mania this April 8th.

Meanwhile, The Rock is presently busy with his Hollywood obligations and has no immediate dates scheduled, as regards performing in the WWE.

Author’s take

Well, John Cena had an incredible rivalry with The Rock, and the WWE would be remiss to let that trilogy match slide away.

Cena and The Rock shared great in-ring chemistry, mat work, and their entire feud garnered the WWE mainstream media attention—a win-win for both the fans and the WWE.
