WWE News: John Cena confirmed to play iconic video game character

Maybe The Undertaker will answer John Cena now
Maybe The Undertaker will answer John Cena now

What's the story?

John Cena may have been unsuccessful with regard to calling out The Undertaker, but he's certainly faring well outside of WWE. It turns out that he will be playing Duke Nukem, in the film adaptation of the iconic video game.

Thank you to Comicbook.com for the news update. The movie will be released sometime in the future because at this moment the creators don't have a script.

In case you didn't know...

John Cena is perhaps the most successful WWE superstar to have emerged from the Ruthless Aggression Era. He's carried the company on his strong back for almost two decades now and has remained the face of the company for a really long time.

In recent times, he's forayed outside the squared circle as well, most notably into the world of Hollywood. He's met with a fair amount of success and has almost become a part time WWE superstar.

The heart of the matter

In addition to confirming the fact that Cena will play Duke Nukem, the creators of the movie said it will be like Deadpool with regard to tone:

We are working on Duke Nukem right now. It's going to be about tone. That's about tone. How do you nail that tone in the way that Deadpool nailed the tone? I think we have to do that and if we don't get the tone right then we're not going to make the movie.

The creators said that Cena could pull out when he reads the script. For the time being, however, he was their first choice.

What's next?

John Cena has been calling out The Undertaker for a while now. With one week to go before the Grandest Stage of Them All, we're pretty certain that he could show up and surprise the world. The crowd would be quite ecstatic.

Author's take

I'm not really a gamer, but I have fond memories of this game as a kid. Cena seems an odd choice, compared to how I always pictured this particular character.

Anyway, Cena is a professional and I'm sure he'll do justice to this super iconic role.
