What's the story?

John Cena was advertised for WWE Survivor Series in November, and it was widely expected that he was to make his comeback to WWE in the month before the pay-per-view on the Smackdown Brand.

This has now changed and Cena is no longer advertised for Survivor Series or any other WWE show at all before the Live Events scheduled after Christmas.

In case you didn't know....

John Cena faced Roman Reigns in a match at No Mercy after an epic buildup. He lost the match to the Big Dog and raised Roman's hand, acknowledging his victory. It seemed like he was saying goodbye to the WWE fans and he became a little emotional. Later he said on Raw Talk that he felt "lighter" and it was obvious that WWE was using Roman's victory over Cena to make him the top man in WWE.

While it was obviously not Cena's last match since the match has been over, Cena confirmed that he was going to dial back on his WWE appearances, and would slowly appear less and less on WWE televised programming.

The heart of the matter

John Cena is no longer advertised for WWE Survivor Series or any WWE programming before Christmas. Currently confirmed for an unnamed buddy cop movie with Universal, Cena has many filming commitments, which may be the major reason for this time off from WWE.

He is set to make a return to WWE in the Live Events after Christmas on Raw and Smackdown Live Events post-Christmas. Currently, he is advertised for:

Tuesday, December 26: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, [RAW]

Wednesday, December 27: Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, NY (RAW)

Friday, December 29: Times Union Center, Albany, NY (RAW)

Saturday, Dec 30: Amalie Arena in Tampa, FL (SmackDown)

What's next?

John Cena is now set for a long time off from WWE, only returning post-Christmas. Till then he will likely be fulfilling his Non-WWE commitments and maybe taking some well deserved time off.

Author's take

After well over a decade as the top man in the company, Cena has now truly become a part-timer. As a part-timer, his role is expected to be reduced to big-match appearances where he will be one of the huge draws for the events. At the moment it seems like that his next pay-per-view appearance for WWE will be at the first of the Big Four pay-per-views of the year, at the Royal Rumble.
