What's the story?

John Cena may have made a brief return to the WWE at Survivor Series, but the Superstar is now busy doing the press rounds for his latest film, the animated movie 'Ferdinand'. During an interview with Good Morning Britain to promote the film, Cena took Piers Morgan by surprise by getting emotional when discussing Nikki Bella.

In case you didn't know...

John Cena and Nikki Bella competed in a mixed tag match at Wrestlemania 33 and then the face of the WWE surprised the WWE Universe by proposing to Nikki Bella, of the Bella Twins, in the middle of the ring, and of course, she said yes.

The heart of the matter

During the interview on Good Morning Britain, hosts Piers Morgan and Susannah Reid played the footage of Cena's proposal to Nikki Bella in the middle of the ring at Wrestlemania but were taken aback as Cena appeared to get emotional whilst watching it, tearing up a little. Cena visibly held back tears as they reviewed the footage, with Piers Morgan commenting "You're getting quite emotional." Cena responded with,

"It's because that was the best moment of my life. I couldn't think of a better place to do it. The WWE has been my family for the past 15 years. We have such a strong connection with our audience. The crazy thing about that moment is I was in a match before that and if you watch it back, the audience hated me. But it is such a show of respect that once the performance finished and they realised this was a real moment that we would remember for the rest our lives [they changed]."

Cena also revealed that he was incredibly nervous during the proposal because he didn't know how the crowd would react, before joking that he proposed to Nikki in front of 75,000 people at Wrestlemania so that she couldn't say no.

"I was extremely nervous, because the audience controls the program, and this was a match with 75,000 people. You get to the point where you think 'man this is a good idea', but then you're like 'what if they say no."

What's next?

John Cena is busy planning his marriage and promoting the animated film Ferdinand so I don't think we should expect to see him making a lengthy return to the WWE anytime soon. However I think it's more than likely he'll be involved in the Royal Rumble, the build to Wrestlemania and, of course, the RAW 25th-anniversary show.

Author's take

As someone who is about to get married next year, this is something I can definitely relate to. I was nervous proposing to my fiancé and we were in the middle of nowhere, with no-one else around. I can't imagine how Cena must have felt doing it in front of 75,000 people on the grandest stage of them all.
