WWE News: John Cena's latest release looks strong on box office

Cena proves his worth yet again
Cena proves his worth yet again

What’s the story?

Per estimates by Box Office Mojo, John Cena’s latest movie Ferdinand has grossed a whopping amount of $13 million at the box office in its opening weekend.

The animated movie starring Cena went head-on with the latest Star Wars movie but did considerably well nonetheless.

In case you didn’t know…

John Cena has been competing as a part-timer in the WWE as of late and is busy with multiple Hollywood projects, including movies, television projects as well as reality shows.

Cena provided the voiceover for Ferdinand in the starring role of Ferdinand—a friendly, non-confrontational bull. The 3D-animated comedy has received significant praise from film critics and fans worldwide, besides earning a couple of Golden Globes Awards nominations for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song.

The heart of the matter

One ought to note that although John Cena’s aforementioned movie was initially expected by trade pundits to gross over $15 million in its opening weekend, considering that Ferdinand’s release clashed with that of the latest Star Wars movie—‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, it seems to have lost around a couple of million dollars in the opening weekend.

Needless to say, Hollywood pundits unanimously predicted that Ferdinand’s collections may very likely be negatively affected owing to it releasing opposite Star Wars, especially considering the franchise’s incredible popularity and fan-following not only in the US but the world over.

Ferdinand collected an estimated $13,325,000 in its opening weekend (December 15th-17th), and fell just short of the expected collections, $15 million. Regardless, the movie is said to be doing great business both in the States as well as in the foreign market. Ferdinand was released in 3,621 theatres and has been lauded by experts for holding its ground against the monumental Star Wars movie.

What’s next?

Ferdinand has been nominated in two categories for the 75th Golden Globes Awards and is expected to continue accumulating profits; comfortably surpassing its $111 million budget.

Meanwhile, Cena’s WWE rival Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s next big movie—Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle—is due for a December 20th release in the US.

Author’s take

Hats off to John Cena for his commendable work in the sleeper hit known as Ferdinand.

Given the fact that Star Wars is much more than just another movie, especially in the West, it’s awesome to see Cena’s flick doing so well against ‘The Last Jedi’. Cena truly is superhuman; both in and out of the squared circle.
