WWE News: Johnny Gargano originally thought his Takeover match with Andrade Cien Almas wasn't good

Philad
Philadelphia was treated to quite the match between Andrade Cien Almas and Johnny Gargano...

What's the story?

Wrestling Inc. is reporting on a recent appearance that NXT's Johnny Gargano had on the Edge & Christian's Pod Of Awesomeness show. During the interview, Gargano would talk about the main event match at NXT Takeover: Philadelphia where he took on Andrade Cien Almas for the NXT Championship.

In case you didn't know...

Johnny Gargano is only 30 years old but began wrestling back in 2005. In 2007, he was actually brought into the WWE as enhancement talent in a match on SmackDown against Montel Vontavious Porter.

He would make a name for himself on indie promotions such as Dragon Gate, Chikara, and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla before coming to NXT in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic in 2015.

The heart of the matter...

Many consider the NXT Championship match between Almas and Gargano as the best one in the history of NXT. When Edge & Christian were talking to Gargano about it, he seemed less than enthused. Gargano would explain further below:

"I don't know how to react to that, because I'm like, okay," said Gargano. "You know how it is, though. I mean, you guys know how it is. Like, you have great matches, and everyone else loves them, and everyone's going crazy over them. But for you, it's just like, okay. I think I did okay. I think it was fine. Like, I'm my worst critic, and I hate all my matches, but I'm glad I guess some people like it."

Gargano would mention that the crowd's reaction in Philadelphia felt good in the moment, but at the same time he didn't think they were having a match of the year candidate.

He would re-watch the match a second time at the airport and still didn't feel any different. However, when Gargano watched the match over for a third time, that was when he started to understand why everyone loved the match.

What's next?

The end of NXT Takeover: Philadelphia saw the return of Tommaso Ciampa attacking Gargano with a crutch as Johnny's wife Candice LaRae looked on. In the weeks leading to NXT Takeover: New Orleans, expect this feud to be rekindled, leading to a match at the next Takeover.

Author's take...

To be honest, I think it is a great mindset for a wrestler to have. If you start believing that you're putting on a good match, it may not come out that way.

If you just keep the focus simple and execute what needs to be done, that is when the magic is made inside the squared circle.
