WWE News: Johnny Gargano reveals what makes him the 'last true babyface in the world'
What's the story?
At NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, we saw Johnny Gargano defeat Tommaso Ciampa in the culmination of a long, drawn out feud. Gargano caught up with Chris Van Vliet for an exclusive interview and revealed what makes him so 'over' with the current NXT Universe.
According to Gargano, it is the fact that he is 'real' at a time when so many wrestlers are afraid to be 'human'. We thank Cageside Seats for the transcript.
In case you didn't know...
Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa made waves in NXT upon their arrival as #DIY. Ciampa would turn heel on Gargano and subsequently show up to attack him repeatedly during his feud with Andrade 'Cien' Almas.
The two men would meet in an unsanctioned match in the main event of NXT TakeOver: New Orleans. Gargano would pick up the win with a hot crowd egging him on.
The heart of the matter
Gargano revealed why people think he's the last true babyface in the world:
That's the thing too, people are so afraid to be human beings in this day and age, especially in wrestling. They think you need to be this really tough, angry person at all times. That's not real - I'm a real dude. I think that's a big reason why a lot of people say that I'm the last true babyface in the world.
He went on to say that the regular NXT fan sees a bit of Gargano in themselves:
I’m not dirty, I’m not down, and I’m not gritty... I think it’s just because people can relate to me. People can see that I am a real person that’s just living my dream. At the end of the day, I think that helps them root me on. It’s like ‘look, if this guy can do it, I can do it as well. I see myself in him.’ I think that’s my trick, that's my secret.
What's next?
It remains to be seen what lies ahead for Gargano after he put away his arch nemesis for good. The new era of NXT should be quite interesting. Will Gargano someday become NXT Champion?
Author's take
Gargano is the real deal and how! NXT knows how to book its babyfaces perfectly as well, which has a lot to do with his popularity.
Let's hope he can remain just as popular when he gets called up.
