WWE News: Johnny Gargano talks about the significance of his upcoming NXT Title match at Takeover: Philadelphia
What’s the story?
In a recent interview with WWE.com, former NXT Tag Team Champion Johnny Gargano opened up about his upcoming NXT Title match against Andrade “Cien” Almas, this Sunday in Philadelphia.
In case you didn’t know…
In a recently concluded episode of WWE NXT, Johnny Gargano faced off against three of NXT’s top superstars in a fatal four-way match to determine the new #1 Contender for the NXT Championship.
In an unlikely turn of events, Gargano defeated Lars Sullivan, Killian Dane, and Aleister Black to win the fatal four-way match and became the #1 contender for Andrade “Cien” Almas’ NXT Title.
The heart of the matter
During his exclusive one-on-one interview with WWE.com, Johnny Gargano talked about his current mentality heading into this Sunday’s title match and much more. Here are a few highlights from the interview:
Gargano said that as of right now he is feeling pretty even-keeled and claimed that this match feels like one of the biggest matches of his entire career so far.
Gargano also addressed the fact that NXT Takeover weeks are usually busy, however, this one just feels like a normal week, but he believes that as it gets closer, it will probably start to feel a bit different.
Gargano said that competing in a title match in Philly is great for him because Philadelphia is one of the biggest cities that he has travelled to during his Independent wrestling career.
Additionally, the 30-year-old also noted that a few years ago he got a chance to wrestle in the main event at the ECW Arena and now he gets to compete in the main event at the Wells Fargo Center which is pretty wild for him.
“I traveled there once or twice a month, doing that seven-to-eight-hour drive from Cleveland to Philly just to try and make a name for myself. That was for no money — just doing what I could to try and get people to know the name, Johnny Gargano,” Gargano stated.
What’s next?
Johnny Gargano’s NXT Title match against Andrade “Cien” Almas takes place this Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and this is also Gargano’s first shot at the NXT Championship.
Author’s Take
Gargano is by far one of the most over and popular stars in the NXT roster today, however, I believe that Gargano’s former tag team partner Tommaso Ciampa will interfere in this match and cost Johnny Wrestling the NXT Title.
