What’s the story?

After being booked for a Hell in a Cell match against Shane McMahon, Kevin Owens viciously attacked Vince McMahon at the end of SmackDown Live.

In case you didn’t know...

Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens got involved during the course Owen’s United States Championship feud with AJ Styles. Shane was the special guest referee in Owens and Styles' SummerSlam match which Owens lost and requested a different special guest referee for his next championship match.

Baron Corbin was named the special guest referee but was replaced with Shane later in the match, who went on to count the pinfall that cost Owens his championship rematch.

The heart of the matter

Vince McMahon came out at the end of the show to address the brawl that broke out between Shane and Owens, and booked a match between Shane and Owens for the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.

Owens asked McMahon if he had permission to “beat a McMahon” without reprisals and Vince agreed. Unfortunately for Vince, Owens hit him with a headbutt that busted him open.

Owens then proceeded to kick and punch Vince multiple times and ended the beatdown with a frog splash from the top rope to Vince.

After being helped by medical personnel, Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon returned to WWE programming and helped her father to the back to close the program.

What’s next?

Apart from the official match for Hell in a Cell, it also saw the return of Stephanie McMahon to WWE television for the first time since the buildup to WrestleMania 33.

It remains to be seen if Stephanie has any role in this feud going forward.

Author’s Take

This was an action-packed segment to close one of the best SmackDown episodes of the year.

What happens next will be very interesting, considering that Hell in A Cell is still many a few weeks away.
