WWE News: Kevin Owens regains his United States Championship on SmackDown Live
Just two days after WWE’s Payback PPV, which saw Chris Jericho take the United States championship from the man who defeated him for it at WrestleMania – Kevin Owens – we have yet another title change once again.
On the latest episode of Smackdown, Owens defeated Jericho to regain his belt – and his claim to being the New Face of America – and then proceeded to brutalise his former friend severely afterwards.
The feud between the two Canadians has long been building, ever since last August, when Owens offered to help Jericho in his rivalry against Enzo & Big Cass. Following that, the two proclaimed they were “best friends” – even throughout Owens’s Universal Championship run.
The end of that friendship came, ironically, during a “Festival of Friendship” that Jericho threw for Owens, in part to apologise for accepting a title match against Goldberg on Owens’s behalf. Thanks in part to a distraction by Jericho, Goldberg won the title, and Owens responded by challenging his former best friend to a match for Y2J’s US title at WrestleMania 33, which Owens won.
So, that brings us to now. Owens is United States champ once again and unleashed his wrath right after he regained it as you can see in the video below.
It’s been common knowledge that Jericho has been planning on going on tour with his band, Fozzy, this summer, and this was a prime way to write Jericho off television – especially with AJ Styles already named #1 contender for the belt.
For now, we do not know when Jericho will return to the ring. Jericho has often said that he doesn’t plan on having a “retirement match” of any sort. However, he’s also said that this past run has been one of his favourites, so much so, that he even agreed to keep working for a number of more months after his original deal was up.
Let’s hope that the Ayatollah of Rock and Roll-ah has another couple of runs left in him.
