WWE News: Kevin Owens slams WWE's new "selfie" promo style

Kevin Ow
Kevin Owens grabbed the camera and told the world how he really feels about WWE's new promo style

What's the story?

You may have noticed WWE veering towards "selfie" style promos rather than traditional backstage interviews over the past few weeks on RAW and SmackDown.

Well, Kevin Owens is a man who likes to have his voice heard - and he recently had a pop at the new style of promo at a WWE Live event.

In case you didn't know...

WWE has been undergoing a slight overhaul when it comes to post-production features recently - adding graphics to promos and having Superstars direct their comments selfie-style, apparently using mobile phones.

WWE RAW has also undergone a change of style with a new logo and we've even had 'The Usos' cut a promo where, every time they said "locked down", a prison door slammed across the screen.

The heart of the matter

Kevin Owens grabbed a camera at a SmackDown Live house show on his way to the ring to make sure his voice was heard on WWE's change to Superstar promos - and he screamed that he should be getting credit for the new style as he's been doing it for six years.

"Is this the new thing everyone does? Talk to their phone like that? It's not like I was doing this stuff six years ago. But I don't get any credit for that, just like I don't get any credit for being one of the most decorated superstars of the last two years in WWE."

What's next?

Well, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. There's no doubt we'll see more of these promos on RAW and SmackDown tonight - will KO open up more on the matter, or will any of the other WWE Superstars hit back? I guess we'll find out soon.

Author's take

This is typical KO, and why he's such a good heel. Even just small things like this. From what we've heard in the past, Owens gets a certain level of control over his promos and, considering this was at a live event, I'd assume Owens done this off his own back and WWE officials liked it so much, they put it on social media.

In terms of the promos, they've caused some division on social media among the WWE Universe, so it's very smart for Owens to address it. I personally don't mind them too much, but I do think WWE may be compensating for the lack of pyro with on-screen graphics. I do like that KO took a pop, though, and I can't wait to see if anything else comes of it.
