WWE News: Kevin Owens vs AJ Styles for the United States Championship
What’s the story?
It was made official on Talking Smack that Kevin Owens will be facing AJ Styles at Backlash for the United States Championship.
In case you didn't know....
Kevin Owens became a 2-time United States Champion on the latest edition of Smackdown Live after defeating his arch rival Chris Jericho. It didn’t come as a huge shock to fans that Jericho dropped the title within 2 days of winning it, as he will be leaving to do a tour with his band Fozzy.
AJ Styles became number one contender to the United States Championship after defeating Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin in the Superstar Shake-up edition of SmackDown Live.
The heart of the matter
Shane McMahon confirmed on Talking Smack that The Phenomenal One would be challenging The New Face Of America for the US Title. It will undoubtedly be one of the marquee matches, and there has been some speculation among fans that it could main event the PPV instead of the WWE Championship match between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal.
AJ Styles has transitioned into a babyface without having to actually turn. His current gimmick is that of “Mr SmackDown”, where he proclaims SmackDown Live to be the house that he built. He is without a doubt the most featured top star on the blue brand.
Since Jinder Mahal hasn’t made waves before becoming number one contender, it will definitely be interesting to see which match goes on last. One thing is for sure, the United States Championship match will be the real main event for the fans.
What’s next?
AJ Styles has a little over two more weeks until he takes on Kevin Owens for the United States Championship.
Author’s Take
It would be a wise idea to put the US title match last, as it will surely be the match of the night. If they do put it on before the WWE Championship match, the crowd is almost guaranteed to be burnt out for the Randy Orton vs Jinder bout. It is the true main event of Backlash, featuring SmackDown Live’s top superstar: AJ Styles.
The feud should ideally go on for longer, with Owens retaining and AJ Styles transitioning into a feud against Randy Orton at Summerslam.
