WWE News: Kofi Kingston creates new record on SmackDown Live; overtakes Brock Lesnar's record
What's the story?
Kofi Kingston has had a whirlwind few months as he has found himself in the race for the WWE Championship, hoping to accomplish the one thing that has evaded him in the WWE.
He got an opportunity to book his spot at WrestleMania 35 and a match against Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship on this week's SmackDown Live, in a Gauntlet match.
Kingston won the match, and in turn, created a new record on SmackDown!
In case you didn't know...
On SmackDown Live, Kofi Kingston was to face five of SmackDown's toughest competitors in the Gauntlet match. Kofi first eliminated Sheamus, followed by the Irish Superstar's tag team partner, Cesaro.
The next person to face Kingston was Rowan, Daniel Bryan's henchman, whom he also defeated, which left him with only two remaining Superstars to defeat to get an opportunity to face Bryan at WrestleMania 35.
Kingston, miraculously, defeated Samoa Joe, and finally, Randy Orton, winning the Gauntlet match, and creating a new record.
The heart of the matter
In his second Gauntlet match of the year, Kofi Kingston entered the WWE record books as he became the first Superstar to eliminate three back-to-back Superstars on SmackDown Live for the second time. Brock Lesnar is the other person to have achieved this on SmackDown, way back in 2003, when he eliminated Charlie Haas, Shelton Benjamin, and Kurt Angle.
Kofi previously achieved this feat last month, when he faced off against his Elimination Chamber opponents to determine who would be the last person to enter the match from the Chamber. He was in the ring for more than an hour before being eliminated by AJ Styles.
What's next?
It remains to be seen if Kingston will get another opportunity after Vince McMahon added another match following Kingston's Gauntlet match win, losing to Daniel Bryan, on SmackDown Live.
