What’s the story?

According to the reports in The Wrestling Estate, in a recent Q&A at iPlay America in Freehold, New Jersey, Kurt Angle opened up on a myriad of topics (Transcription credits: John F Corrigan).

Angle answered several fan questions in detail; and also revealed the reason he came back to WWE in a manager’s role rather than that of an in-ring competitor.

In case you didn’t know…

Kurt Angle returned to the WWE after an 11-year hiatus earlier this year and was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame.

Angle subsequently assumed the role of Monday Night RAW’s on-screen General Manager; largely working in the aforementioned role, besides also competing sporadically in marquee PPV matchups and live event matchups.

The heart of the matter

Kurt Angle recalled how he’d been away from WWE for 11 years during which he was working at Impact wrestling till 2016, besides also competing in the indies against performers such as Rey Mysterio, Cody Rhodes and Alberto Del Rio.

Nevertheless, much to the surprise of fans present at the Q&A session, Angle revealed that he’d in fact been trying to get back in WWE since 2013, however, Vince McMahon wasn’t confident in the Olympic gold medalist’s ability to stay clean, given Mr Angle’s long-running issues with drug addiction.

Furthermore, explaining why he didn’t jump into the ring right away upon returning to WWE, Angle stated—

“I guess it took four years (laughs) to stay clean. I’m 49 years old (*applause*) and I’ve had five broken necks, so Vince McMahon wasn’t going to bring me right back to wrestle.”
“He wanted to see if I could pass the drug test, if I could pass the physical, if I could stay clean.”

What’s next?

Kurt Angle presently serves as the onscreen GM on Monday Night RAW. The WWE Hall Of Famer is also rumoured to be building towards a Wrestlemania feud against Triple H in the weeks to come.

Author’s take

Kurt Angle is one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time.

Angle is class and dignity personified, and his simplicity and dedication to the craft shine through in every appearance he makes. Here’s hoping we get to see more of Angle competing in the WWE.
