What’s the story?

As per PWInsider, Matt Hardy has now submitted a new specimen, so as to trademark the ‘Broken’ gimmick.

On that note, it’s being reported that Hardy has roped in the services of an IP (Intellectual Property) lawyer working out of Nashville, Tennessee to aid him in the legal process.

In case you didn’t know…

Matt Hardy, his brother Jeff, Reby, King Maxel and the former’s father-in-law Senor Benjamin portrayed the Broken gimmick during their time as part of TNA/Impact Wrestling.

However, the Hardys parted ways with the promotion a few months back, following which they’ve been in a highly-publicized court battle with Impact-parent company Anthem, over the usage rights of the wildly popular Broken gimmick.

The heart of the matter

Speaking of which, Matt Hardy’s registration had been rejected by the USPTO (The United States Patent and Trademark Office) back in May of this year; citing unacceptable documents/specimens provided as proof of use.

However, Matt submitted a new specimen through a patent lawyer on October 31st. The latest specimen submitted includes a poster which shows him as the ‘Broken’ Matt character appearing for CWF (Carolina Wrestling Federation) Mid-Atlantic Wrestling during the Hardy family’s ‘Expedition of Gold’ tour.

Furthermore, one ought to note that the Hardys have indeed portrayed the Broken gimmick in multiple promotions other than Impact Wrestling; except the WWE. Matt and co. were also served a legal notice by Anthem, disallowing them from using the Broken gimmick for a performance at an ROH show earlier this year.

What’s next?

Matt and Jeff Hardy presently perform for the WWE’s RAW brand. The Hardys continue their legal battle with Anthem over the Broken Universe’s usage rights—something which is expected to be settled very soon.

Author’s take

Well, truth be told, it’d be awesome to see both the Hardys and Anthem move past this legal drama.

The professional wrestling community deserves the wonderful Broken Universe back in action, and the sooner this court battle is done with; the better for fans worldwide.
