WWE News: Naomi talks about nearly missing WrestleMania in her hometown

Orlando felt the glow at WrestleMania when Naomi recaptured the title...

What’s the story?

In an interview that WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Naomi had with Fox Sports, she reveals that a week before WrestleMania, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to return from injury in her hometown of Orlando.

In case you didn’t know...

Naomi has been with the WWE since 2010 when she would become a participant in the all-female third season of NXT.  She would finish as the runner-up that season to Kaitlyn.

The heart of the matter...

Naomi would further explain the WrestleMania close call below:

"Yes, it was literally the week before (whether it was a close call). And even then it was still a possibility, 'I don't know if you want to risk it or give it more time.' I fought and fought and fought and begged. Just had to really get them to trust me. 'Trust me, I know my body. I can go, I can do this.' And it was literally a week before. I for sure thought I wasn't going to make it."

The injury occurred after her first ever title win at Elimination Chamber.  Naomi would suffer an MCL sprain and the initial diagnosis had her out for two months, missing WrestleMania.

What’s next?

The title picture for the women on Smackdown Live is up in the air at this point. Naomi would take on Charlotte in the main event last week, but the match result was a no contest when Carmella, Natalya, and Tamina interfered.

Author’s take...

Naomi’s was one of the great stories that WrestleMania 33 told earlier this month.  Not only was it great for Naomi to have a WrestleMania entrance in her hometown of Orlando, she was able to recapture the Smackdown Women’s Championship that she never lost.
