In case you didn’t know...
WarGames was created by the late Dusty Rhodes and the match became a staple for NWA and WCW. The last official WarGames match took place at Fall Brawl 1998 when Team WCW took on Team nWo Hollywood and nWo Wolfpac.
The match at NXT Takeover: War Games will feature Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe and Killian Dain of SAnitY versus Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish of the Undisputed Era vs. The Authors of Pain and Roderick Strong.
The heart of the matter
The traditional rules for WarGames matches stated that one wrestler from each team (in a two team setup) would start the match and another wrestler would enter after a five minute interval.
The wrestlers would continue to enter the match at five minute intervals until all team members were in the cage which signaled the official start of the match. Once every wrestler was in the cage, the only way to win was submission or surrender.
The WWE have released the following rules for the match at NXT Takeover: War Games:
All three teams will be contained inside separate shark cages by the entranceway, with a member from each team (as chosen by his respective squad) starting the match.
After five minutes, the remaining members from one team will be released from their shark cage and allowed to enter the match.
When another three-minute period elapses, the remaining members from a second team are released from their shark cage and enter the match.
Following another three-minute period, the final team’s members are released from their shark cage and enter the match.
Once all three teams have entered the WarGames Match, a victory can be attained via pinfall or submission.
What's next?
We wait and count down the days to NXT Takeover: WarGames, coming our way in just over two weeks from Houston in Texas.
Author’s take
While holding the teams in shark cages prior to entering the match may be a bit much, adding pinfalls to the match could work.
With only previous War Games matches as reference, the WWE’s new rules can’t be identified as a benefit or a detriment until the match takes place.
