WWE News: Nikki Bella explains why the WWE wanted John Cena and her to keep their relationship off-screen
Nikki Bella and John Cena got their Wrestlemania moment after their victory against The Miz and Maryse, when Cena got down on one knee and proposed Nikki Bella in front of 75,000+ fans at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida at WrestleMania 33.
Now although Nikki and John have been dating for a better part of five years, with their relationship being one of the star attractions on the E! reality show Total Divas, their real-life relationship had been kept off of the WWE’s weekly on-screen programming.
Speaking to Wrestling Compadres Slamcast, Bella revealed the real reason why WWE management chose to keep their relationship off TV for so long. Here are a few excerpts from her conversation-
“What they realized is that when John was in relationships on-screen, it didn’t do as well as when he was himself. So the fanbase didn’t take him in like how that was. So after the last on-screen, they were like, no girls with this guy.”
Citing examples of similar WWE Superstars, she added:
“And I think with a lot of those guys- like, I don’t think you’ll ever see a girl with Roman (Reigns). There’s just certain people that it’s just, not that it takes away from the ‘Superman’ feel of them, but a little bit.”
Well, considering the fact that WWE finally decided to acknowledge John and Nikki’s relationship on-screen, all’s well that ends well. We here at Sportskeeda send our best wishes to the newly engaged couple. Let the good times roll!
