WWE News: Carmella Reveals That Her Pairing With R-Truth Was Not A Long-Term Plan
What's the story?
During an interview with CBS New York, Carmella talked about her friendship with R-Truth and how it helped her in becoming one of the most beloved wrestlers in the current roster. She also revealed that their pairing was supposed to be just a one-off thing.
In case you didn't know...
Carmella arrived in WWE five years ago and made her debut in NXT along with Enzo Amore and Big Cass. Even though she didn't wrestle much during that time in the developmental brand, she continued to make steady progress behind the scenes. After Enzo and Cass were promoted to the main roster, Carmella started her singles run in NXT and she spent that extra time learning the ropes paid off as after making her main roster debut, she quickly became on of the biggest heels on Smackdown.
She became a star in her own rights by winning the Money In The Bank contract and becoming the longest-reigning briefcase holder. After losing the Smackdown Women's Championship at SummerSlam 2018, WWE made her a babyface and paired her with R-Truth. The duo had earned a lot of success as a team by winning the Mixed Match Challenge last year. They have a segment called 7-seconds dance break, which is really popular with the fans.
The heart of the matter
Talking about her pairing with Truth, Carmella said that there wasn't any long-term plan but since the fans were enjoying what they were doing, writers started giving them more air time.
About dance break segment, she said:
It was supposed to be a one-time thing and same thing with Truth and I. We were never supposed to be a thing, and then it just took off. And that’s why I just love the WWE, because you never know what’s going to happen. It’s so unpredictable, and you never know if things are going to catch on. And now dance break is a thing.
Due to their popularity, Carmella's profile continued to stay high even after she lost her Smackdown women's title. As a result, she got many other high profile spots like entering the Royal Rumble match at #30 and winning the WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal this year.
What's Next?
Carmella is going to compete in the Money in the Bank Ladder match next and will be looking to win the briefcase for the second time. She appears to be going on another solo run, as R-Truth has set his sights on newcomer Lars Sullivan.
