WWE News: Recap of Vince McMahon's press conference for the return of XFL
Ever since Vince McMahon created Alpha Entertainment at the end of 2017, many speculated it was the company that would facilitate the return of the XFL. On Thursday afternoon, Vince would make the announcement official with the relaunch of the XFL in 2020.
The league will consist of 8 teams and a 40-man roster while featuring fast-paced play. An average NFL game lasts for three hours, and Vince's goal is to have XFL games completed in two hours.
Vince is looking to start the XFL season around January or February of 2020. It will consist of a 10-week regular season with four teams making the playoffs.
Vince described the new XFL as "fan-centric" with a lot of innovations. The distribution will be across a variety of platforms to deliver family-friendly entertainment.
With it being family-friendly, Vince stressed that the quality of the human being will be just as important as their ability to play the game. For example, if someone has a prior DUI, they wouldn't be allowed to play in the XFL.
From WWE.com:
“The new XFL is an exciting opportunity to re-imagine America’s favorite sport,” said McMahon. “As we move towards kickoff, we look forward to listening and implementing innovative ideas from players, coaches, medical experts, technology executives, the media and most importantly football fans.”
Regarding the WWE, Vince confirmed that the XFL will not affect his day-to-day operations of the pro wrestling company, and there will be zero crossovers between the XFL and the WWE like there was in 2001.
Unlike the XFL of 2001, Vince will not be out in front for the creation of this league. He will hire professionals who know what they are doing when it comes to running a sports league.
Vince did state that they would be looking at NFL cities for their franchises, but there were no specifics to announce at this time.
