WWE News: Rey Mysterio confirms talks with WWE
What’s the story?
In a recent interview with Inside The Ropes at a recent 5 Star Wrestling event, Rey Mysterio opened up on a myriad of topics.
Most prominently, Mysterio confirmed that talks with the WWE are still ongoing. Besides, Mysterio also spoke about which division he’ll compete in, and who he’d like to face in the WWE.
In case you didn’t know…
Rey Mysterio has performed in several notable professional wrestling organizations the world over, including WCW, NJPW, Lucha Underground and AAA among others.
Mysterio returned to the WWE for a one-off appearance at the Royal Rumble PPV last month and is now said to be booked for a feud in NJPW.
The heart of the matter
Rey Mysterio spoke about his talks with WWE on a potential return. Below are a few excerpts from his statements regarding the same—
"Right now, the conversation is still in the open with WWE so I am hoping that when the time is right and we sit down to talk about the future of Rey Mysterio with WWE, if there is any future with Rey Mysterio, it is going to be good for both parties as much as it will be good for WWE as it will be good for me. I think it is in the best interest for the both of us. Putting that aside, whatever happens there, hopefully, we can continue to do business with 5 Star Wrestling (and indie Wrestling in general). I don't see why not."
Additionally, Mysterio emphasized that he’d like to face WWE Champion AJ Styles in his WWE return, as he feels that him against Styles would make for a great feud. Besides, he’d also like to feud with Finn Balor.
Furthermore, Mysterio explained that there are indeed a few other factors at play too, as regards to what slot he’ll fit into in today’s WWE landscape. He added that it’s unclear whether he’ll be a part of the Cruiserweight or the Heavyweight Division in the WWE.
What’s next?
The vast majority of professional wrestling industry experts believe that Rey Mysterio is set to feud with Jushin “Thunder” Liger in NJPW.
Following which, Mysterio is rumored to be returning to the WWE—if not this year, then in 2019—albeit on a part-time schedule.
Author’s take
Rey Mysterio truly is one of the most entertaining Superstars of the WWE’s Ruthless Aggression and PG eras.
Mysterio has paid his dues and earned the right to work a lighter schedule for the foreseeable future. On a side note—here’s hoping the WWE refrains from booking Mysterio in the Cruiserweight Division, and instead, allows him to perform in the Heavyweight category.
After all, Mysterio is a former WWE Champion.
