What’s the story?

During a recent interview with Starsport, Ric Flair spoke on a range of wrestling related topics including why Randy Orton does not want a John Cena-like role in the WWE.

In case you didn’t know…

During his nearly 15-year-long association with the WWE, Cena has established himself as the "face that runs the place" and put on a host of memorable matches along the way. A thorough professional, he has performed day in and day out, earning the respect of fans as well as those in the wrestling business Over the past few years, he has moved into a part-time role because of his promising Hollywood career and this has led to speculation of him hanging up his boots in the near future

Orton too has been around for a long time and enjoys a strong fan following. However, despite having the management’s support, he has never really been booked as the top guy of the WWE and has worked on a relatively lighter schedule

The heart of the matter

During an interview with Starsport, Ric Flair said that Orton is not interested in being the face of the company as - unlike Cena - ‘The Viper’ does not want to work on his days off and 'exhaust' himself'. However, at the same time, he said that the former 'Legend Killer' is more than capable of being WWE's franchise player..

“Randy is happy, he wants to be home with his wife and kids. Could Randy pull it off? Of course. But Randy isn't interested in working in his days off,“ he added.

While talking on the issue, Flair also touched upon his daughter Charlotte’s career and said she is willingly sacrificing her personal time for her WWE career and enjoying each moment to the fullest.

What’s next?

With Wrestlemania season almost upon us, one can expect the erstwhile Doctor of Thuganomics to return to WWE programming soon and begin his next big feud. As far as Orton is concerned, he is currently gearing up for Clash of Champions where he will team up with Shinsuke Nakamura to take on the duo of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens.

Author’s take

It is quite clear that Orton’s top priority is his family and most people truly respect his decision. Moreover, even if he never becomes the top guy, the master of the RKO has already achieved enough to be considered one of the finest performers of his generation. Enough said!
