WWE News: Roman Reigns set to make history at WrestleMania 34 (Details)
What’s the story?
The WWE has put forth an article on its official website titled “34 fun facts you need to know about WrestleMania 34”, with one of the said facts primarily focusing on Roman Reigns.
Among other notable points, the WWE chose to note that Reigns could make history at WrestleMania 34 by tying a record that’s currently held by Hulk Hogan.
In case you didn’t know…
Roman Reigns has performed in the final match of each WrestleMania event over the past 3 years.
Reigns faced Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship—with Seth Rollins later inserting himself into the match by cashing in his Money In The Bank contract—at WrestleMania 31.
Besides, Reigns also defeated Triple H for the WWE World Heavyweight title in the final match of WrestleMania 32, whereas Reigns defeated The Undertaker at last year’s WrestleMania 33 event.
The heart of the matter
The WWE noted that Roman Reigns is presently tied with John Cena and The Rock for the record of having competed in the final match on a WrestleMania card in consecutive years, at 3. WWE added that should Reigns’ upcoming match against Brock Lesnar close out this year’s WrestleMania, “The Big Dog” will tie Hulk Hogan’s record of competing in the final match of consecutive WrestleMania shows—that being 4 years in a row.
What’s next?
Roman Reigns faces WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar with the title on the line at WrestleMania 34, which takes place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 8th.
The vast majority of professional wrestling experts believe that the Reigns vs Lesnar matchup is likely to serve as the final match of WrestleMania 34.
Author’s take
Honestly speaking, Hulk Hogan’s record of competing in the final matches of consecutive WrestleMania events may, in fact, extend to 5, or even 6 if one is to count his interference in the main event of WrestleMania 4, as “The Hulkster” helped Randy Savage defeat Ted DiBiase for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship.
Hogan defeated Savage for the aforementioned title the ensuing year at WrestleMania 5, following which Hogan lost to The Ultimate Warrior in an Intercontinental & WWF World Heavyweight Championship Match at WrestleMania 6.
Hogan then defeated Sgt. Slaughter for the WWF World Heavyweight title at WrestleMania 7, following which Hogan beat Sid Justice by way of Disqualification at WrestleMania 8.
While Hogan’s interference in the final match at WrestleMania 4 can be discounted, the 4 other aforementioned ‘Mania matchups did see Hogan compete in them and close out the show. Here’s where things get interesting because at WrestleMania 9, the final match of the event saw Yokozuna defeat Bret Hart for the WWF World Heavyweight title, however, Hogan then wrestled an impromptu match against the former, beating Yokozuna for the WWF World Heavyweight title.
Whether or not the aforementioned fact affects Reigns’ chances of tying Hogan’s record, remains to be seen.
