WWE News: Ruby Riot talks about her unique look and how it helped her get into NXT
What's the story?
In a recent interview with Miami Herald, NXT Superstar Ruby Riot shed some light on the inspiration for her character name, unique look and persona and how it has helped her thrive in NXT.
With regard to the origin of her name, Riot revealed that it is derived mainly from her punk rock background.
"The name Ruby Riot was very much inspired by my punk rock background. There is a song by Rancid that is inspired by a Ruby name. Riot, obviously, when you think of punk rockers, mosh pits, riots, everything like that," said the NXT Superstar.
In case you didn't know...
Riot is currently in a feud with The Iconic Duo of Peyton Royce and Bille Kay. However, what is most interesting about this feud is the fact that Sanity's Nikki Cross has been turning up to help Riot in what has been for most of the action a 2 on 1 handicap match.
The heart of the matter
The Punk Rock Ragdoll also answered questions about whether or not her appearance helped her get a WWE contract.
"I would like to think so. There isn't another female superstar on the roster who looks anything like me, that moves like me, and I think that definitely helps me in the long run. I would like to think that will help me with the NXT Universe as well, because of something new and fresh and exciting and not in the mould of the norm of what they've seen prior to this."
Riot also said that instead of shunning her weird oddities, professional wrestling embraced her quirkiness and allowed her to stay true to herself.
What's next?
Unfortunately, Riot was unable to qualify for the right to win the NXT Women's Championship, losing out to the likes of Nikki Cross, Ember Moon and Peyton Royce.
However, the current feud she has found herself in, against The Iconic Duo is intriguing and it will be interesting to see how her relationship with Nikki Cross develops from here on out.
Author's take
Ruby Riot is an exceptionally talented wrestler with great in-ring ability and an interesting personality and character. While she may not be in the NXT Women's title scene right now, it is just a matter of time before she strikes gold.
