WWE News: Sean Waltman reveals why he did not want to hold the WWF Lightweight Championship
What’s the story?
During the latest episode of Sean Waltman’s X-Pac 12360 podcast, former WWE European Champion Sean Waltman discussed why he did not want to win the WWE Lightweight Championship back in the day and why he did not want himself to get pigeon-holed in the WWE Light division.
In case you didn’t know…
In the year 2001, Sean Waltman or X-Pac formed a new faction in the WWF called the X-Factor, along with fellow members Albert and Justin Credible. During his tenure with the group, Waltman managed to win the WWF Lightweight Championship against Jeff Hardy and also became a dual champion when he captured the WCW Cruiserweight Title at the same time.
Later in the very same year, Waltman also became a two-time WWF Lightweight Champion when defeated Tajiri during Summerslam pay-per-view of that very year.
The heart of the matter
During his recent podcast edition of X-Pac 12360, Sean Waltman stated that he was the very last person to hold the WWF Lightweight Championship, however, apparently, X-Pac fought for a very long time to not hold that particular championship as it resulted towards various pay cuts for himself, which was the actual issue why X-Pac refused to win the WWF Lightweight Title. Sean Waltman stated:
"One time, I got my payoff and I gave him [Jim Ross] a call. It was a SummerSlam payoff and I asked him if they were paying me by the pound? So that's how I felt about the pay scale there. That you were paid by the pound sometimes, and it's not really, but you can get that being in the WWE at times."
What’s next?
Waltman is currently working on the Independent scene all over the US for various promotions such as Pro Wrestling Syndicate, IPW UK, House of Hardcore, and more. However, the D-Generation X member has been making one-off sporadic appearances for WWE, like he did as a guest on Raw’s 25th Anniversary episode.
Author’s Take
Back in the day, X-Pac was definitely one of the standout Cruiserweight and Lightweight Superstar who worked under the WWF banner. However, X-Pac’s situation is totally understandable and it is very much clear on why he wanted his way out of WWF’s Lightweight division.
