WWE News: Seth Rollins claims top WWE stars were idling before The Shield's debut
What’s the story?
On a recent edition of Sam Roberts’ Wrestling Podcast, Seth Rollins opined that most of the WWE’s top stars, except CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, were ‘idling’ without passion in their work before The Shield’s main roster debut back in 2012.
Additionally, Rollins said that healthy competition between himself and his Shield brethren, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns existed during their run as a faction.
Besides, "The Architect" asserted that although he wished to come back to the WWE as a babyface -- following his career-threatening knee injury -- in hindsight, his heel run upon return worked out perfectly in the WWE’s storylines.
In case you didn’t know…
Seth Rollins, whose real name is Colby Lopez, performed for the WWE in NXT and made his main roster debut as part of The Shield alongside Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns.
The group disbanded in 2014, with all three members going on to become top singles Superstars in the WWE.
The heart of the matter
Seth Rollins addressed the issue of jealousy potentially existing between himself, Ambrose and Reigns. He explained that although they constantly tried to outdo one another, the competition between them was healthy and in fact helped them ascend to the next level.
Furthermore, Rollins spoke about The Shield being broken up too soon pointing out that although he disagrees with the WWE’s decision of disbanding the group he understands that the company was in need of three main-event calibre singles Superstars back in ’14.
On that note, Rollins took a rather subtle shot at the WWE’s top Superstars when he said the following: “There were so many guys at the top who were just kind of idling. There was no passion in the work, and there (were) a couple of guys, I felt Punk and Bryan were really starting to push the envelope, but beyond that, there weren't guys with honest passion and fire for what we do to constantly push the envelope and hoping to get better.”
“So that (has) always been my mantra, just find something, find a goal, and push for that as hard as you can."
What’s next?
Seth Rollins is presently on a Tag Team run with former Shield stable-mate Dean Ambrose, and they are the reigning RAW Tag Team Champions.
Author’s take
Seth Rollins is an excellent performer and phenomenal talent, who has been unfairly relegated to the mid-card as of late.
In my opinion, the WWE needs to book him as a heel, given the fact that the man draws an insane amount of heat as the old-school villain, rather than the generic babyface he is right now.
