WWE News: Seth Rollins opens up on The Shield's reaction to their break up
What's the story?
The Shield dominated WWE for nearly two years after they appeared to invade a triple threat match and assist CM Punk in getting the win. But all good things must come to an end. How did Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns take the news when they first heard they were splitting up?
It turns out the members of The Shield were just as ready to break up as the WWE Universe was to see them disband. Seth Rollins recently spoke with Sam Roberts on Sam Roberts' Wrestling Podcast where he revealed how the Hounds Of Justice took the news about their impending breakup.
"Well, no, [they did not want to break up] we weren’t ready for it. We thought we had a big babyface run in us, which is what we just started. We had two months with Evolution, having a couple of six-mans. We were like, ‘alright, let’s go!'"
In case you didn't know...
Seth Rollins was the first-ever NXT Champion so he was destined for greatness from the get-go. WWE figured out a great way to not only utilise him but also bring up two other promising superstars in the process.
The Shield made their debut at the 2012 Survivor Series and ran roughshod over the roster while they were a unit. They not only snagged the WWE Tag Team Championships but Dean Ambrose also held the United States title for an impressive 351-day run, making him the longest-running US Champion under WWE's banner.
But The Shield broke up on June 2nd, 2014 thanks to multiple chair shots from Seth Rollins to his brothers.
The heart of the matter
Rollins obviously changed his feelings about the break up once it was revealed he was to become the face of The Authority.
He also remarked how if WWE was going to break up The Shield there didn't seem like any better time than when the stable seemed to be on top of their world.
"But once it was kind of laid out and the ball started rolling in my head, I was like, ‘okay, this is definitely something I can slide into’ and it worked out quite well.”
What's next?
Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose mended their fences and are currently the Raw Tag Team Champions after defeating Sheamus and Cesaro at SummerSlam. Whether or not Roman Reigns eventually joins the duo is another story entirely.
At this juncture, Roman Reigns seems to be fixated on bigger goals, primarily the Universal Title. But first, he'll need to deal with John Cena.
Author's take
I remember watching The Shield's break up go down and I called it before it happened. WWE kind of telegraphed it a bit once Seth Rollins wasn't in the frame on television. I told my friends to watch out because Seth might be turning. They told me the "shut up" because it wasn't going to happen.
It turns out Seth Rollins did turn on his brothers and it meant the beginning of great things for all three members of The Shield. Each of them held the WWE Championship at Money In The Bank 2016 and there are probably plenty of memories to come as long as they're on the same brand.
It could be only a matter of time before WWE decides to get the band back together!
