WWE News: Shelton Benjamin will not be returning to WWE due to injury

“The Gold Standard” has run into some bad luck

On the first Smackdown Live after the draft, it was announced in a vignette that Shelton Benjamin would be returning to the WWE for the first time in 6 years. This excited the WWE Universe, as many have felt in retrospect that Shelton Benjamin was one of the most underutilized talents in WWE’s Ruthless Aggression Era, just by what a gifted athlete he is.

However, Shelton Benjamin announced today on twitter that he would not be returning to WWE anytime soon, due to a torn rotator cuff, and will be needing surgery. It is similar to the injury John Cena faced early this year, which kept him out for about 5 months.

It is highly likely that this injury was discovered while going through the standard medical procedure in Pittsburgh. This also means that Benjamin will be out of action for the rest of the year, and possibly a few months into next year.

Benjamin was said to be returning to have a “Chris Jericho” like role, which meant being the veteran who would put younger talent over.

He sent out a series of tweets on the issue:
