WWE News: Stephanie McMahon reveals what she thinks of AEW as competition
What’s the story?
In a recent interview with Fortune Magazine, Stephanie McMahon was asked directly about what she thinks of seeing 'more competition from rivals like AEW' - and the Chief Brand Officer gave an incredibly pragmatic answer - saying she thinks it will make WWE better.
In case you didn’t know…
Stephanie McMahon was interviewed by Fortune magazine on the topic of WWE trying to be bigger than Disney.
Interestingly, 18 months ago, McMahon had said that WWE being sold to FOX or Disney wasn't out of the question in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek - a matter that's definitely changed with WWE now in cahoots with FOX due to a television deal which will see SmackDown move from Tuesday nights to Friday nights on their programming in October.
We've certainly thought about it. It would be foolish not to.
There was a time when it came across as seedy, kind of playing to barroom brawls. [Now] our lines of business are really more akin to Disney than they are to anything else.
It's also notable to add that WWE has been undergoing some changes recently which has seen a return to edgier content.
The heart of the matter
In a recent interview with Fortune Magazine, Stephanie McMahon was asked about AEW as competition for WWE, and what the impact on WWE could be. McMahon answered optimistically and pragmatically.
“You’re starting to see some more competition from rivals like AEW, which recently made the move to cable..."
"I think it will ultimately make us all better, I really do."
What’s next?
For WWE, SummerSlam is just around the corner, emanating from Toronto, Canada, this weekend, live on the WWE Network.
