WWE News: Sting regrets never having a match with The Undertaker

Sting was all for a dream match with The Undertaker

What’s the story?

Speaking to Justin Barrasso of SI.com at a WrestleCon event during WrestleMania 33 weekend, Sting spoke of his regret of never having a match with The Undertaker.

The Background

Sting made his only WrestleMania appearance at WrestleMania 31 in a match against Triple H, which ended in defeat for the WCW legend.

Although future Mania matches may have been on the table in the years following, a career-ending injury in 2015 scrapped any of those ideas. During his match with Seth Rollins at Night of Champions, Sting was power-bombed into the turnbuckle and severely injured his neck to the point that he was forced to retire.

Although Sting had a memorable, albeit brief, run with WWE, fans never got to see the often rumoured dream match between he and The Undertaker, a match that Sting would have loved to have.

The heart of the matter

Sting’s Mania moment against Triple H received mixed reviews from fans of ‘The Icon’, with many people having a stronger desire to see him face-off with ‘The Deadman’ instead.

During his interview with SI.com, Sting admitted that a match with Taker would have been a dream for him too.

“There was a worldwide desire to see that match, It was a dream match for me, too…I regret not being able to get in the ring with him one time”

Despite admitting this regret, ‘The Vigilante’ did point out that overall, he is more than satisfied with his career and feels like he and Taker have both left lasting legacies on the professional wrestling industry although they never competed against one another.

“Of course, if I had a chance, I’d do it. But look at ‘Taker’s career; did he miss out on anything? Look at my career. I don’t think I really missed out on anything, either.”

What’s next?

Although “never say never” is a common phrase in the wrestling business, I think it’s safe to bet that a Sting vs. The Undertaker will never happen. With both men now retired from in-ring competition, this can be considered a fantasy match that, unfortunately, the fans never got to see.

Author’s Take

It’s a shame that The Undertaker and Sting never came face-to-face in a WWE ring, especially considering how close it came to actually happening. However, in hindsight, with Sting coming to the company towards the end of his career and Taker also being in the twilight of his career at the time, maybe the two wouldn’t have been able to deliver a match worthy of the billing.
