What's the story?

The Miz has become one of the best heels in WWE over the past few years and it seems that his storyline with John Cena leading into last year's WrestleMania was one of the things that really moulded him into a main event calibre star. Despite this being one of the biggest storylines of his career it seems that there were parts of it that Miz wasn't originally comfortable doing.

In case you didn't know...

Miz and his wife Maryse have become the IT couple of WWE over the past few years and it seems that the couple were finally able to wrestle alongside each other at WrestleMania 33 when they took on John Cena and Nikki Bella.

In the build-up to the iconic match that was later featured on Total Divas and saw John Cena finally propose to his longtime girlfriend Nikki Bella after their victory, the company decided that the best way for Miz and Maryse to gain cheap heat would be to dress up as the popular couple and decide to use the fact that Cena refused to propose to Nikki against her.

The heart of the matter

In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, The Miz revealed that this part of the storyline almost didn't happen since Miz originally didn't think that it would become something memorable.

He said: "I didn’t want to do it at first, I just didn’t know if it would be good. When I go out there, I set out to do something memorable. Something great. And when I first heard the pitch of 'Hey, do you want to imitate them?,' I was like, "I don’t know. I don’t know if it’ll be great. I don’t know if it’ll be good.' I kinda turned it down."

It seems that Miz obviously did change his mind and it became a running theme on SmackDown Live for a number of weeks and even saw Miz and Maryse make their first appearance on Monday Night Raw dressed and Nikki and John. It does seem as though Miz thought that the proposal was the perfect ending to their feud.

"A lot of the stuff we were doing wasn’t even written. We were just going off the cuff. And the way the editors did it, with the music, how it was shot, how it was filmed, everything clicked and it all worked out. When people first heard the match was John Cena and Nikki Bella vs. The Miz and Maryse, people couldn’t stand it. They were like, 'John Cena should be going up against The Undertaker. The Miz should be going against A.J. Styles.' Everyone was upset, but then cut to three weeks later and everyone’s talking about this match. Cut to WrestleMania, it’s one of the matches everyone’s looking forward to seeing. [Cena’s] proposal made it huge. If you look at the whole story, that was the perfect ending. And that’s what we do. We tell stories."

What's next?

Miz recently returned to WWE following a short hiatus so that he could film The Marine 6. He faces Roman Reigns Monday Night as part of Raw's 25th Anniversary where he will finally get his rematch for his Intercontinental Championship.

Recent rumours suggest that Miz could be regaining his Championship ahead of The Royal Rumble, a match that the star is still yet to declare his place in.

Author's take

The Miz is a fantastic actor and his feud with John Cena worked, it was only when he began imitating Cena that he was really able to have some fun as part of the storyline and Maryse proved that she wasn't scared to make a fool of herself either. It did turn into something memorable, but only because Miz was able to turn it into something interesting, he made that feud work and it did become a huge WrestleMania moment that will now go down in history.
