WWE News: The New Day on if they miss being heels and possibly splitting up
What’s the story?
Four-time WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day, recently spoke with The Undefeated prior to this Sunday’s WrestleMania 34 event in New Orleans.
During the interview, the trio of Big E, Xavier Woods, and Kofi Kingston spoke about The New Day possibly splitting up and, if they miss being heels on WWE TV.
In case you didn’t know…
The trio of Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston, and Big E, collectively known as The New Day, made their WWE debut in 2014 and ever since then, the group has been on a dominating rise in the WWE.
They have won the Raw Tag Team Championship on two occasions (with their second reign being the longest for any Tag Team Championship in WWE history at 483 days).
The New Day is also a former two-time Smackdown Live Tag Team Champions and has been defending their tag belts under the 'Freebird Rule', with all three members of the group being recognized as Champions.
The heart of the matter
During their conversation with The Undefeated, The New Day spoke about a host of topics and below are a few highlights from the interview: (H/T: WrestlingInc)
According to Big E, he thinks that as a trio, The New Day has been doing something pretty unique that has helped them carve their own lanes in the WWE in various different ways.
In addition, Big E also noted that as individuals he, along with Woods and Kingston, have already earned a lot of success. However, all three men originally saw themselves as a group/faction and eventually ended up on the tag team division in the WWE.
"We love tag-team wrestling, but all of our goals individually can still be achieved as The New Day. I don't think there has to be any kind of breakup whatsoever.”- Big E.
Big E also claimed, that any one of the three New Day members could possibly pursue towards a singles title and meanwhile, the other two can still be in a tag team and the group as an overall could still achieve individual goals while staying as a collective.
During the initial stages of The New Day’s career, they portrayed the role of cocky and mean heels and as per Kofi Kingston, one of his favorite things to do as a heel was to be able to berate children and play the role of a ‘bad guy’ and yell and threaten the kids in attendance.
“We go out there and you see kids really getting into what we do, so to go out there and kind of have a little fun with them and hopefully at the end of the match they get their way and they feel they've caused us to fall or whatever. I do kind of miss that."
Furthermore, Xavier Woods also claimed, that being able to play the role of heels was definitely a big part of everything and despite currently being babyfaces on-screen, The New Day might eventually go back to their old roots someday, and once again, get back to being mean and arrogant heels.
“Yelling at children that they should be doing their homework and them getting irate. But then it's cool because you see everyone behind them that sees this kid interacting with us and losing their mind and they start doing the same thing; now everyone's involved. It was a cool way to not just involve that kid, who's going to remember that for the rest of his life, but involve everyone else who's also paying money to come to this show, this interactive experience. It's something we're not doing right now, but we might get back to it."- Xavier Woods.
What’s next?
The New Day will challenge for the Smackdown Live Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania 34 this Sunday, in New Orleans, when they square-off in a triple threat match against The Usos and The Bludgeon Brothers.
Author’s Take
New Day as heels was definitely something unique, and I hope that someday, we might get to see them turn heel once again, despite them being such over as babyfaces.
