WWE News: The Rock comments on his Survivor Series debut 21 years ago

What’s the story?

It’s been 21 years to the day since the Rock made his WWE debut, and he still hasn’t lived down those wardrobe choices from Survivor Series 1996.

You can follow Sportskeeda's live updates and coverage of Survivor Series 2017 right here.

The ten-time world champion recently took to Twitter to remember that first-ever outing for the company, reflecting on “the world’s worst wrestling outfit ever” and expressing his gratitude for the welcome he was given by the Madison Square Garden crowd that evening.

In case you didn’t know…

The Rock’s legendary career in WWE began on Nov 17th, 1996, in New York City at Survivor Series. There, wrestling under the name Rocky Maivia and donning that now infamous tassel-laden attire, he featured in a traditional four-on-four elimination match, pinning both Crush and Goldust on his way to becoming his team’s sole survivor.

Going in depth

Though he’d later go on to establish himself as one of the biggest stars in the industry's history, the Rock didn’t quite have the look of a world-beater during that Survivor Series debut.

On top of that dodgy outfit, he’s also noted in the past that he didn’t even realise he had his back to the hard-cam when entering the ring. All that gesticulating and trash talking, and all the while he had his back to the audience.

Safe to say he's since made progress in front of the camera...

Next steps

This year’s Survivor Series takes place in just a couple of days time on Sunday 19th November at the Toyota Center in Houston. And while the Rock isn’t going to be there this time around, a couple of names from his late-90s/early-2000s heyday will be in the form of Kurt Angle and Triple H.

Author’s take

Credit to the Rock for once again having time to give a nod to his pro wrestling roots, even if it means digging up the second-most unflattering image of him on the internet. No prizes for guessing the most unflattering.
