WWE News: Triple H explains why Johnny Gargano vs Tommaso Ciampa headlined NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, talks NXT turnover
What’s the story?
As reported by ESPN, Triple H opened up on a myriad of topics, including NXT.
Triple H revealed the reason behind the Johnny Gargano vs Tommaso Ciampa match going last at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans. Besides, Triple H also spoke about the high-volume of NXT turnover, and why it’s, in fact, a positive for NXT and WWE as a whole.
In case you didn’t know…
Triple H is regarded as the founding father of WWE’s NXT brand—one that serves as a developmental territory for the WWE’s two leading brands, RAW and SmackDown.
As regards NXT, a phenomenon which seems to have caught the eye of pro-wrestling fans & experts the world over is that whenever a particular Superstar gets over with the NXT Universe, they’re almost immediately issued a main-roster call-up, which in turn serves to create a temporary hole in NXT.
The heart of the matter
Triple H initially spoke about the Johnny Gargano vs Tommaso Ciampa grudge match going last at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans during WrestleMania 34 weekend. The Game provided his take as to why the matchup received the honor of closing out the show, over the NXT Championship and North-American title matches—
“I feel like any of them could have (headlined), and this was a debate. A lot of points of view on it. There's a part of me that goes, 'Whoa, the title should close,' and then there's a part of me that goes, 'You cannot pass that emotion.' You just can't. No level of moonsault, no level of flip off a ladder, no level of any of that is gonna pass that level of emotion and feeling -- that level of emotion of the storytelling.”
"I don't know how you could have gone off the air better than Gargano gets his life back and his wife's in there. Unless I have Ciampa run back in there and piledrive her, that's the end. There's always next time."
Furthermore, Triple H explained that despite top NXT Superstars being incessantly called up to the main roster, the fact remains that NXT is all about new talent. He added that when one looks at the NXT TakeOver card on WrestleMania weekend, there are barely any Superstars from last year’s card who were performing at this year’s TakeOver.
Triple H also pointed out that when one is to look at the WrestleMania 34 card, there were likely only two matches that didn’t have anyone from NXT in them.
What’s next?
Triple H continues to groom new talent in the WWE’s NXT brand.
The vast majority of professional wrestling experts have heaped a ton of praise on Triple H for his role in training the next generation of WWE Superstars—something which Triple H’s peers and competitors have also commended him for.
Author’s take
Triple H is a genius—and that, in and of itself, would be a severe understatement.
NXT has played a huge role in creating new talent, and here’s hoping many more years of success lie in its future.
Besides, one ought to respect Triple H’s mindset regarding the Gargano-Ciampa feud—in the sense that emotions & storytelling do indeed trump simple in-ring performances.
