WWE News: Trish Stratus opens up about her Royal Rumble experience and her spot with Mickie James in the Royal Rumble
What’s the story?
WWE Hall of Famer and seven-time Women’s Champion Trish Stratus was recently a guest on Chasing Glory with Lillian Garcia during which she discussed her experience at the first ever Women’s Royal Rumble match, earlier in the year.
In case you didn’t know…
Following her initial retirement from pro wrestling in 2006, Trish Stratus has been making one-off sporadic appearances for the WWE ever since and earlier this year, the former WWE Women’s Champion was a surprise entrant in the first ever Women’s Royal Rumble match.
Trish also received a huge reception from the WWE Universe, upon her return to the WWE during the Royal Rumble pay-per-view.
The heart of the matter
While interacting with Lillian Garcia recently, Trish Stratus opened about her experience in the first ever Royal Rumble match and claimed that she was apparently hesitant about working the Rumble match. Trish also spoke about her altercation with her long-term rival Mickie James during the Rumble match. Here are the highlights from the interview:
On being hesitant about working the Women’s Royal Rumble match:
Trish Stratus claimed that she was initially a bit hesitant about working and taking part in the first ever female Royal Rumble match when she initially received a call from VP of Talent Relations Mark Carrano.
Stratus admitted that the reason why she was hesitant in the first place to accept the invitation was because of how long she had been away from the ring.
The former seven-time Women’s Champion, however, said that she eventually regained her confidence once she got some training and was confident to participate in the Rumble match.
On her moment with Mickie James during the Rumble match:
Trish Stratus was previously involved in an eight-month angle with Mickie James that eventually culminated at WrestleMania 22 with James winning the Women’s Championship from the prior.
And when asked about her special moment with James in the Rumble match, Stratus revealed that the spot between her and Mickie wasn’t originally planned, however, the two ladies apparently found a place for it within the match and she’s really happy with the reception the spot received from the WWE Universe.
What’s next?
Following Trish’s temporary return at the Royal Rumble, it will be interesting to note if WWE approaches her once again in the near future in order to work a match. However, the 42-year-old is currently enjoying retirement and time away from pro wrestling.
Author’s take
Trish Stratus and Mickie James’ rivalry, in my opinion, was one of the best women rivalries of all time in WWE and it was somewhat amazing and nostalgic at the same time to see the two ladies share the ring with each other during this year’s Royal Rumble match.
