WWE News: Velveteen Dream defends Vince McMahon and blames WWE Superstars
What's the story?
NXT Superstar Velveteen Dream has taken to social media to defend Vince McMahon and criticise WWE Superstars for not being entertaining enough.
In case you didn't know…
Although people now know him as Velveteen Dream, the man behind the eccentric character – Patrick Clark – first made an impression on the WWE Universe when he participated in Tough Enough 2015.
Following his elimination midway through the competition, Dream signed a developmental contract with WWE in October 2015 and he has since earned a reputation for himself as one of wrestling’s hottest prospects.
A regular presence at NXT TakeOver events, he recently defeated the returning Tyler Breeze at TakeOver: XXV to retain the North American Championship – a title he has held since defeating Johnny Gargano on an episode of NXT in February 2019.
The 23-year-old has also been known to take a riskier approach compared to his fellow Superstars, most famously at TakeOver: Brooklyn IV in August 2018 when he wore attire containing the words “Call Me Up Vince” for his match against EC3.
The heart of the matter
In a series of posts on his Instagram story, Velveteen Dream began by asking whether it is fair to question the job that Vince McMahon is doing in WWE – something that high-profile names including Jon Moxley and CM Punk have done in interviews after leaving the company.
“Is it fair 2 critique Vince? I mean after all WWE is a form of entertainment. U do know WWE is a TV show, right!?!?”
He added that McMahon is an evil boss on-screen, as well as the director of three weekly shows – Raw, SmackDown Live and 205 Live – and almost every WWE show that fans have witnessed for the last 40 years.
Using the analogy that current Star Wars actors are to blame for the franchise not being as good as it was in the 1990s, Dream went on to compare McMahon to Star Wars creator George Lucas and claimed that it is the job of WWE’s Superstars to produce entertaining television.
“Vince can write all day. It’s ur 'favorites' that have 2 make it entertaining.”
What's next?
NXT’s next TakeOver event takes place in Toronto on August 10. Velveteen Dream will almost certainly defend his North American Championship on the show.
