WWE News: Vince McMahon not using the 'XFL' name; possible names revealed
What’s the story?
Brad Shepard was the first to report that Vince McMahon could be potentially restarting the XFL.
In reference to the same, on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer asserted that Vince McMahon will likely refrain from using the ‘XFL’ name for his rumored football league.
Expounding on a couple of potential names that McMahon may use to promote his new football league, it has been revealed that ‘United Football League’ or ‘For The Love Of Football’ may be the names used to promote the rumored league.
In case you didn’t know…
The XFL was promoted by WWE boss Vince McMahon back in 2001 and saw only one season coming to fruition. Subsequently, the league was shut down in light of negative fan-response to the XFL as well as several football pundits criticizing the league for deviating too much from American Football and the NFL.
As we had previously reported, the vast majority of professional wrestling industry insiders have pointed out that Vince McMahon may be looking to try his hand at the business of American Football once again by potentially restarting the XFL.
The heart of the matter
Brad Shepard reported that Vince McMahon is set to fund an organization — independent from the WWE — with said organization being called ‘Alpha Entertainment’. Apparently, McMahon is set to pursue investment opportunities including but not limited to professional football under the new firm.

Veteran professional wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer explained that McMahon is not likely to use the XFL name, should he re-enter the world of football, owing to the negativity surrounding the XFL name and brand.
Furthermore, Meltzer revealed that VKM Ventures—a company owned by Vince McMahon—has applied to trademark the terms ‘United Football League’ (UFL) and ‘For The Love Of Football’ back in September. Either of those names could be used as the name of the new football league.
Additionally, Meltzer also elucidated that UFL is the more likely choice and will be utilized in order to promote McMahon’s new football league moving forward.
What’s next?
Details on Vince McMahon’s football venture are likely to unravel over the next few days. One ought to note that McMahon’s aforementioned football venture is not funded by the WWE, and is solely being funded by Vince McMahon.
Author’s take
McMahon is a genius, and as for his daredevilry when it comes to event-promotion, there are few better than him. Although the XFL may not have lived up to expectations back in the day, given that the NFL is going through a rough phase right now, McMahon’s new football league just might turn out to be a surprise hit.
