WWE News: Was AJ Styles and Finn Balor's "Too Sweet" a WWE directive?
What's the story?
AJ Styles was in the middle of a tour around South America and all of a sudden he was told the TLC pay-per-view event needed his services. Therefore he jumped on a plane and flew fourteen hours to make the show in Minneapolis. It's a great thing he did it, too, because the match Styles had with Finn Balor was very good and even resulted in an amazing "too sweet" in the middle of the ring.
Some people have been under the impression this was a move at the request of Vince McMahon to stick it to the Bullet Club. But AJ Styles has spoken up to set the record straight.
In case you didn't know...
WWE sent a cease and desist letter to The Young Bucks over their usage of the "too sweet" hand gesture.
This seemed like a low blow and many people thought WWE could have done without threatening legal action of the popular pro wrestling gesture.
The heart of the matter
Luis Paez-Pumar from Latin American online culture magazine Remezcla commented about AJ Styles and Finn Balor's "too sweet" by sending out a tweet to Styles which said: "Vince McMahon really flew AJ Styles from Chile to Minneapolis at the last minute, just to throw a televised middle finger in the Young Bucks' face. Honestly, pettiness goals."
It didn't take AJ Styles long to reply and he made it very clear this was not a directive sent down from McMahon. But instead, it was a genuine expression of respect in the ring.
What's next?
Seeing how well AJ Styles vs Finn Balor did the first time around a return match would be pretty cool.
Seeing how Survivor Series is going to be brand vs brand, it might make sense to expect to see these two lock horns again down the line.
Author's take
I would book another match for Survivor Series between these two and have AJ Styles go over. Then they could collide during the Royal Rumble in some respect.
If Finn Balor is going to face Brock Lesnar for the Universal Title and AJ Styles is to face Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship, it might make this situation tricky, but they could make it work.
It just goes to show that you don't need weeks of buildup to make a match amazing. It was just two guys proving who was the better man in Minneapolis and it was too sweet, to say the least.
