From the WWE Rumor Mill: When WWE decided to bring back WarGames

W

WarGames is coming back, but when did they make that decision?

What's the story?

WWE is bringing back WarGames, except it won't be on the main roster. This epic throw-back gimmick match will take place at NXT TakeOver: WarGames which was formally known as NXT TakeOver: Houston. There's a reason why they seemed to change the name of the upcoming NXT special after already branding it. Dave Meltzer noted WWE's decision to bring back WarGames was kind of a last minute one.

In case you didn't know...

Even though the announcement hasn't aired on television when it happened at the NXT television taping on Wednesday night it was hard to hold that kind of news in for long.

You can read all the spoilers from the TV tapings here in order to get the entire picture of what went down to cause this announcement. But needless to say, the upcoming WarGames match is going to be plenty exciting.

The heart of the matter

WWE is always changing in a wave of neverending transition, compromise, and whimsy. Often times an idea can be set in stone one minute but altered or scrapped entirely the next. Apparently, that is what recently happened in NXT but the end result was a WarGames match so nobody is complaining on this side.

Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio the choice to bring back this historic idea for a gimmick match was a rather late one. The initial plans for TakeOver: Houston was to have Drew McIntyre defend his NXT Championship against Adam Cole with the rest of The Undisputed Era (Fish and O'Reilly) challenging SaNITy for the NXT Tag Team Championships.

Things were obviously switched around and while it isn't known when the decision was made, Meltzer said it was a late one. Although it was probably decided on before Triple H took off to India because that is certainly the kind of thing he would have wanted to weigh in on.

What's next?

NXT keeps getting better and better. I can't really think of what I'd like them to do next seeing how WarGames has been taken care of. Perhaps an old-school scaffold match is next in line? Of course, those were always incredibly risky and didn't give a lot of room to work in the first place so let's forget I ever mentioned it.

Author's take

The guys who are participating in this WarGames reboot have wrestling running through their veins. Authors Of Pain should feel lucky to be in this match and hopefully, they realize how special of an opportunity it is for them.

Those nine guys will lay it all on the line in Houston as they compete in a match which is historically a brutal and bloody affair. Although bleeding during a match is discouraged in modern-day WWE, there's little you can do to stop the effects of steel on flesh.

The exact rules haven't been announced for the match so we don't know if it'll be the same WarGames set up fans knew from yesteryear. But it was still a huge surprise when WarGames was announced and if this is a sign of things to come, the WWE Universe is in for a wonderful ride.
