WWE News: WWE abandons trademarks for Tony Nese and Drew Gulak

Yet to be WWE superstars?

Drew Gulak and Tony Nese, have been prominently featured in the Cruiserweight Division since arriving. While Nese has been part of the division, Gulak has been used more as an enhancement talent, constantly taking the pin in practically every match.

PWInsider reported that WWE, has abandoned the process of obtaining trademarks for the names, Drew Gulak and Tony Nese. The filings were just reported yesterday as part of a batch of filings alongside Bobby Roode, TJ Perkins, and others. Both Drew Gulak and Tony Nese have not been signed to WWE contracts yet.

It will not be surprising if they are signed to contracts soon. Some reports last month stated that WWE, initially considered getting Gulak as a coach in the Performance Center, but they are instead using him as an enhancement talent.

As for Nese, there were reports that WWE officials are very high on Nese, and there has even been consideration of him being the Cruiserweight Champion down the line. However, as noted, he has not yet signed a contract.

The reason behind WWE's call to reverse their decision on getting trademarks for these names is still unknown. Perhaps, they still don’t have long-term plans for either performer. For the most part, the Cruiserweight Division performers own their name.

The tradition of letting wrestlers use outside names started most notably with Samoa Joe last year, where he came in using his Ring Of Honor and TNA name. This continued with the likes of Austin Aries, Bobby Roode, AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, among others, who have been allowed to use their prior names. It definitely benefits them long-term.
