WWE News: WWE announces Cruiserweight Championship tournament
What’s the story?
As seen on tonight’s episode of 205 Live, new 205 Live General Manager Drake Maverick formerly known as Rockstar Spud announced that his first order of business is to help the WWE Cruiserweight Division reach its true potential. In this course to change the landscape on 205 Live, Maverick also announced a 16-man Cruiserweight Championship tournament in order to crown a new Cruiserweight Champion.
In case you didn’t know…
On last week’s episode of 205 Live, Daniel Bryan announced that the first ever General Manager for the 205 Live show would be announced this week. Pri Bryan’s massive announcement, there had been several rumors which suggested that the likes of Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho, or even Hurricane Helms could take over the reins as the new GM on 205 Live; however, as seen earlier today, former TNA X-Division Champion Rockstar Spud has been announced as the new head of management on the purple brand.
The heart of the matter
Following the firing of former WWE Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Amore, the WWE management is now on course to crown a brand new Cruiserweight Champion. During today’s action-filled episode of 205 Live, we witnessed the first two matches of the 16-man tournament, as Cedric Alexander defeated Gran Metalik and former Cruiserweight Champion TJP overcame the challenge of 205 Live’s newest signing, former WWE UK Champion Tyler Bate.
Next week, the WWE Universe will also witness the next two matches of this 16-man tournament as former champion Kalisto battles fellow luchador Lince Dorado, and Hideo Itami goes one-on-one with NXT superstar Roderick Strong.
What’s next?
As noted during today’s episode of 205 Live, the final of this cruiserweight tournament will take place at Wrestlemania 34 and the new Cruiserweight Champion will be crowned later this year in New Orleans at The Grandest Stage of Them All.
