WWE News: WWE confirms injury to Akira Tozawa
What's the story?
WWE.com has posted an update on former Cruiserweight Champion Akira Tozawa after the Sun of the Ring was brutally attacked by Drew Gulak on this week's 205 Live. It has been confirmed that Tozawa suffered an injury at the hands of the Master of the PowerPoint Presentation.
In case you didn't know...
It feels like a long time ago now, but it was only two months ago that Akira Tozawa was defeating Neville on RAW to win his very first WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Tozawa lost the title back to the King of the Cruiserweights just six days later, but his place in history was assured.
Tozawa has faded into the background since his feud with Neville ended, but it seems as though the Japanese star has recently sparked the ire of one Drew Gulak. The former CZW World Heavyweight Champion has taken exception to Tozawa's chanting, as he tries to clean up the mess that is 205 Live.
The heart of the matter
Akira Tozawa was scheduled to do battle with Drew Gulak on this week's episode of 205 Live, but Gulak jumped Tozawa before the match could get started. Gulak put the boots to Tozawa on the entrance way, before throwing him into the video board.
Gulak seemed to be walking away from the scene, before returning to blast Tozawa in the throat with his 'No Chants' sign. Tozawa went down clutching his throat, as the announcers speculated whether or not Gulak was trying to put an end to Tozawa's chanting.
WWE.com has since confirmed that Tozawa has suffered a throat injury in the attack. The website stated that Dr Stephen Daquino has said the former champion has suffered a laryngeal contusion and swollen vocal chords. No time frame was reported for Tozawa's recovery.
What's next?
With a week until the next episode of 205 Live, there is every chance that Tozawa will recover in time to get a measure of revenge on the Regal Beagle next week. The storyline is unlikely to be featured on RAW, so fans will have to wait until next Tuesday night before the next stage in this feud.
Author's take
Whilst one does not want to rush to assumptions, it is more than likely that the 'injury' is little more than the latest development in the story. Gulak is on a mission to create his own 'Drewtopia' on 205 Live, and Akira Tozawa's vocal chords have seemingly been sacrificed for that dream.
