WWE News: WWE looking to sign two top female Japanese superstars
With WWE getting more and more invested in the Japanese market, it looks like they are going beyond just Shinsuke Nakamura, Asuka, and Hideo Itami.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is now interested in signing two female stars from Japan: Io Shirai and Kairi Hojo, who are two major stars in the Japanese wrestling promotion STARDOM. The WON reported:
“Both Io Shirai and Kairi Hojo have gotten offers to start in WWE in 2017 in the last week or two. Both told Stardom management about it this week. Shirai said she was going. Hojo, at first, didn’t make a final decision and there is some question if she can pass the physical because she’s had two major concussions in the last two years. ”
Io Shirai is considered the “ace” of Stardom. Dave Meltzer of the WON has even praised Shirai and Hojo, as being among the best wrestlers in the world. Their addition is not only needed but would add tremendous value, to the NXT Women’s Division.
Firstly, it would give current NXT Women’s Champion, Asuka, a run for her money. At the moment, she has no competition whatsoever, and after the raid of NXT, none of the women have been elevated to her level. So, she has to take on veteran Mickie James at NXT Takeover: Toronto.
The process of building up stars such as Ember Moon, Liv Morgan, Billie Kay, Aliyah, etc. is going to take time, and while they build them up, people like Shirai and Hojo (if she comes) can either feud with her or even take the spot.
This would allow The Empress Of Tomorrow to get a main roster call-up which many feels is long overdue for her. However, as long as there is no one to reach her level, she will be in NXT for a while to come.
Here are the highlights of a match of Io Shirai against Mayu Iwatani, another highly praised wrestler. Shirai is wearing the red attire:
