WWE News: WWE UK Championship match announced for NXT Takeover: Chicago

The United Kingdom championship will be defended at the upcoming NXT Takeover

What’s the story?

WWE has revealed that the United Kingdom championship will be defended at the upcoming NXT Takeover: Chicago.

The background

While on their biannual European tour, WWE has recorded a set of tapings for the United Kingdom Championship show that is set to air on the WWE Network very soon.

The UK Championship tournament, which aired exclusively on the WWE Network, was considered a success, much in the same way as last summer’s Cruiserweight Classic was, and fans have been eagerly awaiting to see what’s next for the British talent from the competition.

WWE has been planning a weekly UK TV show since the UK Championship tournament back in January of this year and once this weekend’s tapings are completed, you can expect to see this new show premiere in the very near future.

The heart of the matter

At Saturday’s (6th May) tapings, it was announced that Sunday’s show will see Pete Dunne take on Trent Seven to determine the new Number One contender to the UK Championship. Also, the UK Championship will be defended by current champion Tyler Bate against Mark Andrews.

The winners of these two matches will then go on to face each other in Chicago at the next NXT Takeover on Saturday 20th May.

What’s next?

This is certainly a huge opportunity for whichever two men win their respective matches on May 7th. NXT Takeovers have become one of the WWE Network’s biggest shows and this will give the British wrestling talent some great exposure and could set the new weekly UK show off on the right foot.

The Chicago crowd can make or break a Superstar, but if the UK Championship match can get the fans on their side and deliver a great match, then the future of British wrestling could be very bright indeed.

Author’s take

There are a lot of young and hungry British wrestlers around at the minute and WWE has done a great job in rounding up some of the best for the UK Championship tournament and the upcoming weekly British show.

It’s good to see the British performers and fans get rewarded for their dedication and passion for professional wrestling with their own show on a huge platform in the WWE Network.

If WWE handle this correctly and the show doesn’t become an afterthought, à la 205 Live, then this could be a very special time for British wrestling.
