WWE News - WWE wants top UFC stars for Wrestlemania 33
Celebrities and athletes have always played a part in WWE’s signature event, Wrestlemania as they help the company gain mainstream attention and attract more viewers.
Lately, there has been an increased interest on the part of the WWE to bring in major UFC names for some of their biggest shows. According to the latest reports from Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE officials are looking to reach an agreement with a UFC star for Wrestlemania 33, and they have several top names in mind.
Here is an excerpt from the report:
“There is talk about trying to work a deal for a UFC star. Obviously, Ronda Rousey would be choice No. 1. Conor McGregor might be but he's got heat with a lot of the talent, but it's not ruled out. Paige VanZant, who was originally booked for something at SummerSlam before she pulled out to do a fight on the Vancouver show, is another time being talked about.”
It is no secret that Rousey is a WWE fan, and having already made an appearance for the company before, at Wrestlemania 31, it wouldn’t be hard to convince the UFC Bantamweight to return.
Conor McGregor is someone who is considered tailor-made for the WWE, due to his natural charisma and larger-than-life personality. However, McGregor made some negative headlines in August 2016, when he mocked the WWE performers for their lack of toughness, calling them ‘dweebs’.
Needless to say, his incendiary remarks caused massive outrage in the locker-room, as a lot of current and even former stars, took to social media to retort.
Here is the video of Ronda Rousey’s first WWE appearance alongside The Rock at Wrestlemania 31 where she is ’laying the Smackdown’ on Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.
Another top name from the MMA promotion that WWE was linked to, as recently as SummerSlam, is Paige VanZant. It was verified and reported by Fox Sports that WWE’s top brass had contacted the UFC Strawweight’s management team, regarding her involvement in the biggest show of the summer.
The plans didn’t materialise, but the interested has not dwindled. Bringing in VanZant would also make sense since she was also featured on the dance show, ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and has garnered substantial mainstream fame.
It will be interesting to see if the UFC reciprocates WWE’s favour of loaning out Brock Lesnar to fight Mark Hunt at UFC 200.
