WWE/NJPW News: Chris Jericho confirms he is done with NJPW
What’s the story?
Chris Jericho shocked the world last year when he announced he would be facing Kenny Omega in NJPW in what seemed like a one-off gig, but his attack on Tetsuya Naito at New Year's Dash looked to set up a future clash and signal a future for Jericho in the promotion.
Well, Y2J himself has taken to Twitter to confirm that he has nothing scheduled with NJPW and is "done" with the company for now.
In case you didn’t know…
Earlier in the year, Jericho competed in a losing effort against Kenny Omega in a five-star match for the IWGP US Heavyweight Championship at the Tokyo Dome, during Wrestle Kingdom 12.
During this year’s NJPW: New Year’s Dash at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, the man with the most Intercontinental Championship reigns in WWE history, decided to brutally attack the leader of Los Ingobernables de Japon, Tetsuya Naito.
Things have been quiet between Jericho and NJPW ever since, but Dave Meltzer claimed that NJPW scrapped a potential Jericho vs Naito match at Strong Style Evolved due to the show already selling out - but that the match was now likely for the Dominion pay-per-view.
The heart of the matter
Well, Jericho took to social media today to confirm his future in New Japan Pro Wrestling. When asked by a fan on Twitter, Y2J said he was unfortunately done with the company.
What’s next?
Chris Jericho is set to miss this year’s Wrestlemania 34 event as he is on tour with his band Fozzy - performing an early gig on the night of WrestleMania and being guest of a "watch along" party for Mania immediately after.
Interestingly enough, Jericho's one-man tour in the UK was postponed due to a conflicting schedule with WWE, but there are no solid details on him returning to the squared circle as yet.
Author’s Take
Well, it seemed like Jericho was really enjoying his work with NJPW and the attack on Naito definitely signalled another match for Y2J, but it looks like it was just a cool appearance as Jericho was in Japan, so why not have him appear in some capacity?
You never know, though. Jericho is known for being a bit of a joker online, speaking openly about it in the lead up to his match against Omega, so this could all be a work and he may have something in the pipeline!
