What's the story?

Current IWGP and former WWE tag team champion Davey Boy Smith Jr. (David Hart Smith in WWE) took to social media yesterday to talk about a strange situation he found himself in Calgary. The son of the British Bulldog revealed that he had managed to save the life of a stranger by stopping them from jumping off a bridge in the Alberta city.

In case you didn't know...

One half of current IWGP Tag Team Champions Killer Elite Squad, Davey Boy Smith Jr. has been around the professional wrestling business his entire life. Smith is the son of the original British Bulldog — former WWF Intercontinental, European and Tag Team Champion Davey Boy Smith.

Smith signed with WWE shortly after the induction of his uncle, Bret Hart, into the WWE Hall of Fame. He floundered on the main roster until joining forces with Tyson Kidd and Natalya in 2009 as The Hart Dynasty. The duo won tag team gold in 2010, before dropping the titles to Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre.

Smith was released by WWE in 2011, but he has since found success in Japan. Smith currently partners Lance Archer in Killer Elite Squad and is also a member of Suzuki-gun.

The heart of the matter

In a lengthy Facebook status posted yesterday, Smith states how he saw a girl hanging from a bridge in Calgary as someone tried to talk her down. The Canadian Bulldog went to investigate, and it became clear that the girl was trying to take her own life.

Smith subsequently grabbed the girl and dragged her over the barricade onto the road, before restraining her for long enough for police to arrive. Smith revealed that the girl had a gun and that it was only his years of grappling training that allowed him to save her life.

The girl was then taken away by the authorities; hopefully, to get the help she requires. Smith finished the post by talking about how precious life is. The status can be seen below.

What's next?

Fresh from saving lives, Davey Boy Smith Jr.'s focus now turns to NJPW and the upcoming Power Struggle tour. The event is the last major one in the company before the World Tag League, in which KES are expected to play a big part.

Author's take

Whilst the initial reaction is to congratulate Smith on saving a life, the topic of suicide and death is far too complex and personal to be broken down so simply. The reasons the girl had for being in that position will likely never be known. Smith did what he thought was right in the moment, reacting when many may well have frozen.
